On a cold day you need something that is warming and hearty.

When we visited Hungary last year we did try the local food and I went to the indoor market and got some Hungarian paprika and it adds to this dish.


  • 1kg lean braising steak
  • frylight
  • 2 large onions diced
  • 3 large carrots sliced
  • 250g mushrooms (halved)
  • 2 celery sticks chopped
  • 1 tsp lazy garlic
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 400g tin chopped tomatoes
  • 1 stock pot
  • 600ml cold water
  • 300g frozen mixed peppers


  1. preheat the oven 170c / fan 150c / gas 5.5
  2. dice the braising steak into bite sized pieces and season with salt and pepper
  3. Heat a flame prove casserole dish and spray with fry light
  4. Add the seasoned steak and brown off
  5. Add the onions and fry until they are soft for about 5 minutes
  6. Add the garlic and stir through
  7. Add the paprika and the stock pot, carrots, mushrooms and celery
  8. Add the tinned tomatoes, water and bring to the boil and stir
  9. Cover with a lid and put into the oven for 2 hours
  10. After 2 hours add the frozen mixed peppers and put back in the oven for 1 hour.

Serve with mashed potatoes, rice or pasta and enjoy x
